Introduce the results of the World Smart City Expo 2019

The World Smart City Expo 2019 was held under the theme of 'Smart City: Connecting Tomorrow.' Richard Florida, a world-renowned urban economist, attended the event as a keynote speaker at the opening ceremony and discussed the value of the city as a source of growth and creativity as well as the direction to move forward.

The World Smart City Expo 2019 featured 250 companies in the 20,000-square-meter exhibition hall to showcase the latest smart city technology solutions, with a total of more than 25,000 people visiting for three days. The central and local government of Korea participated and operated an experience zone where the visitors were able to experience the smart city in person. The visitors were also able to experience the technologies of the world's smart city as 39 companies from 16 countries around the world took part in the event.




During the expo, consultations worth a total of 265.9 billion won were conducted with overseas buyers, 107.7 billion won of which was actually signed, recording a 38 percent increase from the previous year.

The 2019 World Smart City Expo also hosted civil participation events to raise public awareness of smart city.




As civil participation programs, Smart city Make A Thon, Talk Salon, Smart City Children's Drawing Contest, and Smart City Idea Contest for college students were also held. The participation programs gave us an opportunity to understand what people think about smart city.




The 2019 World Smart City Expo held conferences where smart city experts and citizens gather together and share opinions. Various smart city conferences provided an opportunity for the participants to discuss and share their opinions about smart city.

In particular, along with the conferences, this year’s event will be live-streamed on YouTube so that people will be able to enjoy a variety of programs online. Through live streaming, anyone interested in smart city can check the current status and future of smart city regardless of place at the 2020 World Smart City Expo.

New Move to Change Cities - About 2020 World Smart City Expo

 ㅇ According to the United Nations, the world population is forecast to increase from the current population of 7 billion to 9 billion by 2050, and the rapid urbanization will attract more than 2.5 billion people to cities.

 ㅇ In cities where many people live together in a limited land, various problems began to arise in residential, environment, and transportation. In order to solve these problems, Korea has pushed for smart city policies from an early stage. Smart City began to be introduced as a downtown renewal solution to the urban problems caused by overpopulation, and now it is receiving worldwide attention as a future city model to live in the future.

 ㅇ The global smart cities market is expected to continue to grow and reach $2 trillion by 2025. In Korea, the market is project to expand to 151 trillion won by 2021.

 ㅇ In particular, Smart City has been selected as the central policy of the Korean New Deal Policy, which the government is willing to promote for the era after the COVID-19 crisis, and it is expected that the industry will develop significantly in Korea in the future. Accordingly, the World Smart City Expo is designed to improve global competitiveness by creating and spreading practical outcomes of the smart city policies. ‘Smart City, Connecting Tomorrow’ - 2019 World Smart City Expo to Take Place

The largest international event in Asia-Pacific region will provide a variety of events such as conference, exhibition, civil participation events, etc.

  

□ ‘2019 World Smart City Expo (WSCE 2019)’, the largest smart city international event in Asia-Pacific region, hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (Minister: Kim Hyun-mee) and the Ministry of Science and ICT (Minister: You Young-min) and jointly organized by LH, K-water, and KINTEX will take place in Goyang KINTEX from September 4^th to 6^th.

□ This year's event integrates the World Smart City Week and the Smart Cities Innovation Summit Asia that were held from 2017 and other Korean smart city related events and is newly named as ‘World Smart City Expo 2019’. The event is preparing for a new start as a global leading Smart City event.

 ㅇUnder the theme of 'Smart City, Connecting Tomorrow', many kinds of events will be provided not only for Korean and international city experts, related companies, governments and international organizations related to smart cities but also for citizens such as Makeathon, Idea Contest, Talk Salon, etc. 

 ㅇ The opening ceremony on September 4^th will be attended by some 350 people* from about 30 countries, including domestic and international experts, governments, business people, and mayors of overseas cities who are participating in various programs during the event.

 ㅇIn addition, a world's leading urbanists Florida Richard, a professor at the School of Management at the University of Toronto, is invited as the keynote speaker.

 ㅇ The main events will be conferences, seminars and smart city exhibitions at the KINTEX exhibition hall and conference rooms for three days from September 4^th to 6^th. The event is planning to establish itself as the largest Smart City Expo in Asia by providing better understanding the policy direction and trends for Smart City as well as opportunities for overseas export exchanges.

 ㅇ In particular, the event plans to spread public awareness and consensus on Smart City policies by sharing various ideas about Smart City with the participation of all citizens both children and adults.

□ Talk Salon, which will be held in the form of a talk show, is designed to enhance the general public’s understanding of Smart City through a humanistic interpretation and perspective on Smart City and will be open to everyone. Especially, Professor Jeong Jae-seung, the Master Planner of the Pilot Smart City of Sejong 5-1 Life Zone, which is promoted as the government’s core policy project, will lead the talk show with the theme of ‘How Much Do You Know about Smart City?’ at KINTEX on September 5^th.

World's First National Pilot Smart City Busan

Busan pilot city plans to build a global robot city that utilizes robots in all aspects of life.

The city plans to introduce care robots for the socially disadvantaged and 

service robots for parking and logistics, etc. and to create a robot industry 

development center.

The World's First National Pilot Smart City Sejong 5-1 Life Zone

Sejong and Busan are being promoted as national pilot smart cities. 

They are the high technology intensive future smart city built on the blank lands.

Korea is the world’s first country to create smart city demonstration complexes at the national level while the countries around the world are fiercely competing in the field of Smart City to lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution era.

Sejong now has an empty land and it is divided into 5 regions to build the smart city.

We will create the Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based city that changes citizens' daily lives with 7 areas of innovation, including mobility, and healthcare.

Sejong will function as a single large-scale hospital

For example, there is a plan to provide customized treatment immediately provided upon the arrival of patients by providing the patient’s conditions in real time on their dispatch to the hospital, while dispatching ambulances and providing rescue services in optimal paths

when emergencies occur. 

Smart City Strategy of Korea - ④ Global Networking

We will look into the Smart City Strategy of Korea following the Episode 3. 

Korea establishes smart city global networks with other countries including Netherland,

international agencies and academia to make a sustainable future for smart cities globally.

Various types of cooperation are underway ranging from policy and experience sharing

to joint projects and cross-testing of solutions. 

Furthermore, Korea plans to make the “World Smart City Expo” to be launched from this year into the largest international event in East Asia that leads global issues.

the World Smart City EXPO will be held for three days from 4th September at KINTEX.

Smart City Strategy of Korea - ③ Ecosystem for innovation

Today, we will look into the history of Korea’s Smart City following the  Smart City Strategy of Korea. 

Third, formation of an innovative ecosystem.

In Korea, the Smart City law was legislated already in 2008.

And now, we plan to adopt the “regulatory sandbox” granting temporary waivers to businesses for new technology and pilot services.

In particular, a living lab is a process and a governance for citizens

to find urban problems themselves,

and address them through smart technologies.

It is a core element to form a people-oriented smart city.

Efforts are also underway to pave the way for fostering the industry.

We plan to support youths to start up their business and find new sales channels.
