Smart City, a safe City for Our Precious Children

The number of traffic accidents with child victims under the age of 12 in Korea was 112,558 in 2019, up 5.5% from 106,651 in 2018. Traffic accidents affecting children in school zones are constantly happening. On average 496 traffic accidents involving child victims within school zones take place every year.

Therefore, South Korea is making efforts to improve traffic safety through cooperation and strengthening traffic safety for children utilizing IoT. The smart crosswalk device is expected to assure traffic safety for children on the way to and from school by securing drivers’ visibility so that drivers can recognize the pedestrian crossing in advance in poor weather conditions such as rain at night, preventing pedestrians jaywalking, and improving pedestrian environment.

Fine dust (pollution) is the most worrisome environmental problem for Korean people in recent years. Not only Korea, but also many countries such as China and India are suffering from serious air pollution problems. In particular, growing children can experience more serious problems.

In order to solve this problem, South Korea has installed urban complex sensors based on IoT and collects 10 types of urban environmental data such as weather and noise as well as air quality. Based on the data, local living environment information and forecasts, including fine dust (pollution), ultraviolet rays, heat waves, etc. are provided, and damage caused by fine dust is being reduced.

In addition, south Korea is utilizing IoT to educate children. Parents are effectively managing education through early childhood education support systems and interaction of individual activity system using wearable safety tags worn by their children.
